1. What excites you most about working at Athene North Shore?

“Growing up, I had a parent that sustained a spinal cord injury and became a wheelchair user. Due to this, I observed firsthand the various barriers individuals with disabilities face, especially in outdoor public spaces. I am thrilled to work at a place like Athene North Shore that is addressing these barriers head on to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in outdoor public spaces. Additionally, I am excited for the opportunity to integrate my educational and professional experience in the fields of environmental science and occupational therapy at a place like Athene North Shore to provide endless opportunities for the Des Moines community and connect individuals of all ages and abilities with nature through the creation of inclusive events and programming.”

    2. Describe something you want park users to know about Athene North Shore.

The most important thing park users should know is that it was carefully designed for EVERYONE. We have leaned on the input of design experts, service providers, individuals with disabilities, caretakers, and more to ensure best practice throughout the design and creation of the park and programming. We want all people to feel welcome and able here.

We also know there is always room for improvement, so please do not hesitate to share your thoughts on ways we may continue to evolve and meet the needs of all. If you would like to share your input or perspective, please do not hesitate to reach out to our welcoming seasonal staff, or me directly- we are always excited to learn and talk accessibility!

    3. In five years what do you hope the Athene North Shore will look like and feel like?

In five years I hope the Athene North Shore continues to exude feelings of inclusion, empowerment, and peacefulness for all people. I hope to see our events and programming reaching wide, diverse audiences and continue to connect individuals of all abilities with nature and with their community. Finally, I hope to see Athene North Shore serve as a guide to continue to advocate for universal design, accessibility, and inclusion in public spaces in Iowa and nationwide.
